In fact, he's been killed multiple times, in front of witnesses, and then simply walked back into his court as if nothing happened! Nobody's sure if he's somehow immortal, or maybe the identity is shared. What is known is that Ehkahk has no fear of death. The origin of Ehkhak is a mystery theories include that he is a uniquely intelligent smoke elemental, the hybrid offspring of a djinn and efreet, and even that he is the child or fragment of a slain primordial. Whilst his small stature often sees him underestimated, this poisonous elemental is a dangerous threat indeed - he's a level 25 Elite Controller (Leader), and he loves to exercise his arsenal of poisonous powers! In appearance, Ehkhak (and yes, I find that name as annoying to type as you do to read) resembles a gaunt ash-gray humanoid about the size of a small child, with smoke leaking from his eyes & ears as well as pouring from his back to form ephemeral wings. We first talked about Ehkahk when we discussed his Choking Palace and the Duchy of Fume, back in the Elemental Locales chapter previously. His name and title as the Archomental of the Plane of Smoke go all the way back to the original 1st edition Manual of the Planes and the Planescape Campaign Setting, but he's never actually been really covered in any detail prior to his debut in the World Axis. This book has only five entries, though each entry is multiple pages long and includes several accomplices or other DMing ideas for the reader.Īs the sidebar Ehkhak Through The Years notes, the Smoldering Duke is a "salvaged" figure from the Great Wheel. Other books that will feature these secondary "legendary bestiaries" will include both the Draconomicons, and Open Grave, off the top of my head.
Whilst similar legendary faces like Dispater, Baphomet, Luthic, Bahgtru and Vlaakith appeared in the Manual of the Planes and The Plane Above, they were just mixed into the general list of monsters, which is one of the reasons why I thought that this book actually came out after the The Plane Above. The idea of using these "small" bestiaries to incorporate particularly notorious or legendary figures in the World Axis arguably started with this book here.
